How Sleep Impacts Your Day: Take Advantage Of Your Body’s Superpower

OC Medical Chiropractic>Archives forChiropractic

Sleep is your body’s superpower. It gives you energy, mental clarity, and improves both your physical and mental health. As such, not getting enough sleep impacts your day a great deal. Many people assume that you can make up for sleep deprivation with caffeine, but this isn’t the case.

Here is what you need to know about how sleep impacts your day, what not getting enough sleep does to your body, and how you can address various issues that could interfere with getting a deep, restful slumber.

The Significance Of Sleep For A Good Day

You know how after a good night’s sleep you wake up refreshed, energized, and ready to take on the day? It’s amazing how much good sleep impacts your day for the better! Research shows that sleep is an essential component of being able to achieve your best physical and mental health.

Some of the ways in which sleep affects your day for the better include:

  • Improved memory
  • Better emotional regulation
  • Boosted immune system functionality
  • Maintaining optimal metabolism
  • Improved focus
  • Increased energy
  • Supporting healthy development and growth
  • Decreased risk of health problems
  • Increased productivity
  • Better mood
  • And more!

You know that phrase: “sleep it off”? This stems from how sleep can help your body recover so that you can enjoy improved physical, mental, and emotional health.

The Alarming Effects Of Sleep Deprivation

sleep impacts your day

When Daylight Savings Time hits, you likely feel the effect of sleep deprivation that can happen merely by losing an hour of sleep in a night. You probably feel fatigued, have more trouble concentrating, and may be more irritable throughout the day. Studies show that car accidents increase in the days immediately following Daylight Savings Time and connect them to the increased amount of drowsy drivers.

This tells you just how much losing even one hour of sleep can negatively affect you. Of course, reading the above section and the positive benefits of how getting enough sleep impacts your day gives you an idea of how sleep deprivation can do the opposite.

Some of the ways lack of sleep impacts your day include:

  • Irritability
  • Decreased productivity
  • Memory issues
  • Mood changes
  • Trouble thinking and concentrating
  • Weakened immunity
  • Increased risk of higher blood pressure
  • Increased risk of Type 2 diabetes
  • Increased risk of heart disease
  • Increased risk of weight gain
  • Lowered sex drive
  • Poor balance
  • Decreased healing capabilities
  • And more

You can feel the effects of how lack of sleep impacts your day even when you miss an hour or two. If you chronically don’t get enough sleep, your body won’t be able to function as well as it should and you won’t be on the same level as your peers who do sleep enough. Your mental health can take a hit and your interpersonal relationships can be affected by your increased moodiness. Impaired judgment increases your risk of being in an accident.

Many people don’t realize just how badly lack of sleep impacts your day and your overall health.

What’s Keeping You Up?

Many people know that adults need 7-8 hours of sleep each night. However, many feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done and to get enough sleep. There are a few different reasons for why people don’t get enough sleep.

  • Sleep disorders. Problems like insomnia can keep you up even if you’re exhausted and want nothing more than to sleep. If you think that you may have a sleep disorder, talk to your doctor. They may prescribe you sleeping medication or have other solutions.
  • Not prioritizing sleep. If you’re a busy person, you may view sleep as a luxury rather than a necessity. However, sleep is especially important if you’re busy, as it improves your ability to be more productive.
  • Having caffeine later in the day. You want to avoid caffeine after 3pm. It can take 6-8 hours for caffeine to wear off, which inhibits your body’s production of melatonin. It decreases your ability to get enough sleep and can cause the sleep you do get to be less restful.
  • Not having a set time for going to bed and waking up. Unless you have the freedom of working from home or setting your own schedule, you probably have set times to wake up and go to bed throughout the work week. However, come the weekend, you may turn off the alarm clock and let yourself sleep in, then go to bed whenever you want. This disrupts your body’s sleeping schedule, which can make it harder to go to bed during the work week.
  • Stress and anxiety. These can both cause your body to release adrenaline, which increases your heart rate and energy levels. If your thoughts are racing, trying to calm them can be difficult. If meditation, breathing exercises, and the like do not help you, you can seek out medical help.
  • Too much light. This tells your body that you’re supposed to be awake, which is why it’s recommended that you avoid using technology within an hour of bedtime. Sunlight can make it difficult for night-shift workers to be able to sleep during the day.
  • Napping too long. Babies, young children, and teenagers all need more sleep than adults do. For them, naps can help them get enough sleep. However, napping too long can negatively affect your sleep patterns for adults, especially if you nap later in the day.

These are but some of the reasons why you may struggle to get to sleep at night. If this is a chronic problem for you, seeing a doctor can help you. Sleep is vital to your health. It’s important to take what’s keeping you up seriously and to make getting enough sleep a priority.

How To Help Yourself Get Better Sleep

Knowing how much sleep impacts your day and being able to get enough sleep are two entirely different beasts. People who struggle to get enough sleep because of stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, and more may have an even harder time getting to sleep precisely because they are stressing about their inability to.

Fortunately, though, there are things that you can do to help yourself fall asleep and get better sleep.

  • Don’t stress about it. Easier said than done, but the more that you fixate on the sleep you’re not getting, the harder it is to get enough sleep.
  • Avoid bright lights and screens before bed. Try to dim the lights and do relaxing activities like reading in the hour before you go to sleep, rather than binge-watching that new show on your favorite streaming service.
  • Don’t have caffeine in the afternoon and later. This means sodas, coffees, and green teas. This way, your body will be able to produce enough melatonin to help you be sleepy at night and get restful sleep.
  • Give yourself a cool, dark environment to sleep in. Light tells your body it’s time to be awake, so if you are afraid of the dark, try a soft nightlight instead. You don’t want the temperature to be too hot or too cold, as both of these can cause you to wake up throughout the night. You do want it to be cool, though, to mimic how your body temperature drops when you sleep. If you are a night-shift worker, blackout blinds can help create a dark environment so that you can sleep during the day.
  • Address your stress and anxiety. If your stress or mental health issues are impacting your sleep, see someone who can help you. This can be a therapist, a doctor, or both.
  • Treat medical issues. If lack of sleep impacts your day, it could be a medical problem. Sleep apnea, physical pain, and more can all prevent you from sleeping.

These are but some of the ways you can help yourself get enough sleep. If you have physical pain, like back pain or neck pain, seeing a chiropractor can relieve it. When you don’t have to take painkillers but can have the pain healed, you’ll likely be able to sleep much better.

Chiropractic treatment is an excellent way to get to the root of your issues and obtain natural, non-invasive care. However, there are some chiropractors that give the entire field a bad name. Some chiropractors claim that chiropractic care can do things that it can’t, try to pressure you into long treatment plans you don’t need, and don’t listen to or treat your concerns. As such, it can be difficult to know how to choose a chiropractor.

Fortunately, there are a plethora of excellent chiropractors out there who truly care about their patients. When you know what to look for, it makes choosing a chiropractor easier. Here are some of our top tips on how to choose a chiropractor so that you can rest assured that you’re receiving the best care possible.

choose a chiropractor

#1. Are They Licensed?

A trustworthy chiropractor is one who is a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic. Like any other medical field, chiropractors need to undergo years of schooling after obtaining their undergraduate degree in order to learn the necessary skills, training, and experience to provide proper care to their patients.

You can check to see whether or not a chiropractor is licensed by looking on state websites and Healthgrades.com. When you choose a chiropractor, you’ll also want to check to see whether or not they have malpractice claims or disciplinary actions.

#2. How Experienced Are They?

Now, this is not to say that chiropractors who are younger cannot provide you with the care that you need. However, it is important that they are experienced in treating the type of condition that you’re seeking treatment for. They should know about any complications, how to help you recover and prevent this issue from occurring again, and the treatment methods available to you.

When you choose a chiropractor, see whether or not they are experienced enough to help you.

#3. Can You Get Recommendations?

This goes beyond the testimonials on their website and the reviews you can find on Google. It’s easy for people to fake glowing 5-star reviews. Many primary care providers, physical therapists, and specialists work with chiropractors and can recommend chiropractors who can provide you with the treatment that you need.

However, not all healthcare professionals work with chiropractors. In the event that your doctor can’t give you a recommendation, you can ask the people you know. When you collect recommendations, though, it’s important to recognize that different people have different preferences for their care and that chiropractors may be better at treating some issues than others.

When you choose a chiropractor, remember that a chiropractor who is wonderful for your family member may not be the one who is best suited to your needs.

#4. Obtain A Consultation

You need to be able to trust your chiropractor. You also need to ensure that your communication styles mesh well together. A chiropractor could be excellent, but if you don’t communicate well, this can cause you to feel uncomfortable about seeing them.

When you choose a chiropractor, there are some things to keep in mind. Your chiropractor should listen to you and take the time to ask questions about your condition and your concerns. They should be able to give you informative answers to any questions that you may have.

They should be able to give you an estimate of how long your treatment plan will be – if they tell you that you’ll need to see them forever, you should seek out another chiropractor.

#5. Are They Covered By Your Insurance?

It’s important to note with this point that not all insurance plans cover chiropractic care. You’ll want to first check with your insurance to see whether or not chiropractic treatment is covered or whether you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket for it. If your insurance does cover chiropractic care, you’ll then want to see what chiropractors are in-network.

Some chiropractors provide financing options. If paying for chiropractor care would be a financial burden for you, you can ask to see whether or not this is an option. Some chiropractors also provide discounts for people who need to pay for their care out-of-pocket. This can be important when you choose a chiropractor, depending on your situation.

#6. Is The Chiropractor Committed To Your Recovery?

Your chiropractor should conduct a physical examination and give you an estimate of how long your treatment will take. They should also re-examine you to see how you are progressing. They should order an x-ray, but not unnecessary repeat x-rays. You should notice improvement over the course of your treatments.

Importantly, your chiropractor should refer you to another healthcare provider if they think that another treatment would help you more. Also, they should not pressure you into maintainence or preventative packages.

When you choose a chiropractor, you need one who cares deeply about you and helping you get better. The goal of treatment should be to help you not need chiropractic care anymore, not to keep you getting treatments forever.

Chiropractic adjustments can help with many different issues, from persistent back pain to whiplash and more. However, if you feel weird after going to the chiropractor, you may wonder whether or not something went wrong. This depends on the type of ‘weird’ you’re experiencing. It is indeed normal to feel weird in some cases, but in others, you really shouldn’t.

Here’s what you need to know about common reasons why people feel weird after chiropractic adjustments, as well as common misconceptions people attribute said weirdness to. Let’s get into it!

What Is Normal To Experience After A Chiropractic Adjustment?

In most cases, people feel better after seeing a chiropractor. They feel more relaxed and less tension. In other cases, people may not feel any different, and it may take a few adjustments for them to start to notice the benefits of chiropractic care.

In less common cases, people can occasionally experience side effects after an adjustment. Some of these are normal, and some are concerning and indicators that you should seek out medical help.

Normal Side Effects Of Chiropractic Adjustments

If you feel a bit weird after an adjustment, it could be completely normal.

  • Soreness is commonly reported after chiropractic care when muscle work has been done. This usually goes away within a day or two, similar to soreness after a workout.
  • Aching is another common side effect, and like soreness, results from muscle work. You may feel mild pain if the site that was worked on was injured.
  • Bruising can happen, depending on how easily you bruise and how intense the adjustment way. If it does, it should be mild, not severe.
  • Increased bowel movements may feel weird, but they’re actually a sign that your digestive system is functioning better, thanks to the adjustment.
  • Mild cold symptoms can occur, like sneezing. This is commonly associated with toxic release, but we’ll get more into that below.

Abnormal Side Effects Of Chiropractic Adjustments

However, there are cases where if you feel strange after an adjustment, it’s cause for concern.

  • Numbness can indicate nerve issues. If you feel weird and numb after an adjustment, seek medical care as soon as possible.
  • Sharp, shooting pain can indicate an area that has been misaligned or strained.
  • Difficulty speaking can indicate injury to your spinal cord. If you struggle to speak after an adjustment and you didn’t before, seek medical attention right away.
  • Fainting should never occur. While some light dizziness may occur after an adjustment, you should never lose consciousness.
  • Loss of movement indicates the need for immediate medical care. If anything, chiropractic care should improve your range of motion, not reduce it.

When performed by a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic, chiropractic care is incredibly safe. However, as with any type of treatment, things may go wrong. If you feel off after an adjustment, tell your chiropractor right away, or at your next appointment. They will be able to tell you whether or not this weirdness is normal or cause for concern.

What About Toxic Release?

toxic release chiropractic adjustment feel weird

If you feel strange after an adjustment, you may be told that this is because of toxic release. This is a persistent myth in the realms of massage and chiropractic care. It’s said that subluxations can lead to a buildup of toxins in your body and that when your body is realigned, the toxins are released.

Toxic release can supposedly cause you to feel weird in all sorts of ways, from nausea to headaches to fatigue to cold and flu-like symptoms and more. It’s claimed that as your body detoxifies itself, your symptoms will decrease.

Is Toxic Release Legit?

In a word? No.

Proponents of the toxic release theory are hard-pressed to pin down precisely what the toxins that are being released are. When pressed, they’ll likely say they’re metabolic wastes, like lactic acid. However, anything can be toxic if you have too much of it, water and oxygen included. Thus, people can rarely agree on what these “toxins” their cleanses or treatments or juices are targeting even are.

Your body does an excellent job of detoxifying itself with its kidneys and liver. If your body is struggling to detoxify itself, this indicates issues with your detoxifying organs, which you will need to see a medical professional for.

If there are toxins in your body, such as tobacco smoke, you will need the help of a medical professional. Some “detoxifying” treatments can actually harm you, especially if done without recommendation by a medical professional.

What About That Strange Dizziness?

People often attribute feeling weird after a chiropractic adjustment to toxic release. However, what this really is is your body being realigned, and ergo, being able to release chemicals and hormones, like dopamine. This can cause that brief sense of dizziness as you feel a rush of chemicals from your body being able to function properly again.

Chiropractic adjustments realign your body, which can help it function better as different parts are being able to communicate properly again. It helps you feel better and recover from issues, like back pain.

But if you want a detoxifying treatment, it’s best to talk to your primary care provider about your specific concerns. They will be able to help you determine whether or not your concerns are because of harmful toxins and what can be done to help.

What Do You Do If You Feel Weird After A Chiropractic Adjustment?

No matter what type of weird you feel after a chiropractic adjustment, it’s always a good idea to bring it up to your chiropractor. They will be able to tell you whether or not it’s normal and why it happened. If it’s cause for concern, they will be able to help you obtain further treatment.

Ogden Chiropractic is here to help with all your chiropractic needs. Chiropractic adjustments can improve the function of your body for a healthier, less stressed you. Contact us today to learn more about our chiropractic services – and let us help you if you feel weird after an adjustment.
